EDUCATION

Education is at the heart of the endocrine service. Numerous structural education sessions occur weekly. These include post-clinic meetings, weekly X-ray meetings and weekly clinical departmental meetings. In addition medical patients are discussed at 'morning report' and the main medical staff rounds are an exceptional high standard. All SpRs are given several opportunities for presenting at the Hammersmith Staff Rounds that are acknowledged internationally for their scientific and clinical content. Many of the cases presented at staff rounds are subsequently published.

A monthly regional Endocrine Training half-day occurs for all the SpRs in North-West Thames. Dr. Karim Meeran is the co-ordinator for this training programme that rotates through the different endocrine departments within North-West Thames. All SpRs are encouraged to attend the national meetings for both the British Diabetic Association and British Endocrine Society. The wide variety of clinical cases and turnover of new scientific data ensures that all SpRs can expect to have a large number of first-author abstracts during their time at The Department.

Medical student teaching occurs at both hospitals which have students attached to the firm, for most of the year. Endocrine registrars also have the opportunity to participate in the endocrine pre-clinical undergraduate teaching at Imperial College School of Medicine (ICSM) that is also organised by Dr. Karim Meeran.
