Cardiology Examination 11: Hydration status

  • Finally, assess whether the patient is overloaded by looking at the ankles
    (or sacrum in those who are bedbound) for peripheral oedema
    and listen to the lung bases for the sounds of pulmonary oedema
  • Examine the peripheral pulses
    (or at least suggest to the examiner that you would do this)
  • You might offer (if time permits) to also examine for hepatomegaly,
    which might be enlarged in right heart failure
  • Thank the patient
