Respiratory Examination 6: Tactile Vocal Fremitus

  • Ask the patient to say
    " ninety-nine" in a normal voice
  • Palpate using the lateral aspect
    of your hand
  • You should feel the vibrations equally transmitted from the airway, via the lung to the chest wall
  • Increased tactile vocal fremitus suggests conSOLIDation
  • Reduced tactile vocal fremitus suggests fluid outside the lung (pleural effusion)
  • Vocal resonance (listening with a stethoscope) can be used instead of tactile vocal fremitus
