Cranial Nerves 3: Pupil Responses [ Optic (II) & Oculomotor (III) ]

Pupils

  • Test Pupillary Reactions to Light
    1. Dim the room lights as necessary.
    2. Ask the patient to look into the distance.
    3. Shine a bright light obliquely into each pupil in turn.
    4. Look for both the direct (same eye) and consensual (other eye) reactions.
    5. Move the torch from eye to eye to detect a relative afferent pupillary defect.
  • Test Pupillary Reactions to Accomodation
    1. Ask the patient to look into the distance.
    2. Observe pupil size
    3. Ask patient to look at an object close to their face such as your finger.
    4. Note whether pupil gets smaller (it should).
