Neurological Examination of the Arm 5: Power

Test the following:

  1. Abduct shoulders
  2. Adduct shoulders
  3. Flexion at the elbow (C5, C6, biceps)
  4. Extension at the elbow (C6, C7, C8, triceps)
  5. Extension at the wrist (C6, C7, C8, radial nerve)
  6. Flexion of the wrist
  7. Extension of the fingers
  8. "Squeeze my hand". Oppose the patients squeeze (C7, C8, T1).
    Do NOT ask the patient to squeeze two of your fingers, as this cannot be opposed, and you thus cannot accurately quantify power.
  9. Finger abduction (C8, T1, ulnar nerve)
  10. Oppostion of the thumb
    (C8, T1, median nerve)
